The first mentions of this restaurant in the shadow of our Cathedral date back to the mid-18th century.
Even then it was a place where everybody came by "on foot and on horse," where they departed by stagecoach and travelers and merchants stopped to drink and eat. They could even refresh themselves.
The horses were taken care of, purchased and exchanged. From there they went back to Brussels, Leuven and Tienen.
About the origin of the name there are several stories,
One about a vicar of the Cathedral which walked around the neighborhood every single day. Another refers to the bright red tile floor that even to this day the restaurant is known for.
But more likely, in the absence of house numbers it was known as “the house-with-the-red-hat” because of the only red tiled roof in Antwerp.
According to a source unknown Quinten Matsys (a famous painter) lived in this building where we now eat, drink and relax.
We are located in downtown Antwerp. There are several parking houses in the area, for example the Brabo Parking at Groenplaats 46.
